Before you pay a mover, check these details.

A low estimate can become expensive when important services, price-change rules, or extra-charge triggers are unclear. Use this checklist before paying a deposit or signing paperwork.

• 1. Is the estimate binding or non-binding?A binding estimate and a non-binding estimate do not work the same way. Make sure the estimate type is written clearly and ask exactly when the price can change.
• 2. Is your inventory complete?Confirm that every large item, box estimate, special item, and requested service is included. An incomplete inventory can make two quotes look cheaper than they really are.
• 3. Are possible extra charges listed?Look for stairs, elevators, long carries, shuttle service, bulky items, packing materials, storage, fuel, parking, and waiting time.
• 4. Is the company a mover or a broker?A broker arranges transportation; a carrier performs the move. For an interstate move, verify the legal company name, USDOT number, registration status, and business type.
• 5. Are the deposit and refund terms clear?Confirm the exact deposit, who receives it, accepted payment methods, cancellation deadline, and whether any amount is refundable.
• 6. Is protection for damaged or lost items explained?Ask which valuation option applies, what it covers, and what you must do to choose or decline additional protection.
• 7. Are pickup and delivery expectations written down?Confirm the dates or windows, contact information, delivery conditions, and what happens if timing changes.
• 8. Are you being asked to sign anything incomplete?Do not sign blank or incomplete documents. Make sure the written estimate and other paperwork show the agreed services and charges.

For interstate moves, FMCSA advises consumers to get written estimates, verify mover registration, understand estimate types, and watch for warning signs such as large deposits or blank documents. State and local rules may differ for moves within one state.
